The development of human music occurred against the background of natural sounds like the lapping of marine waves, the rippling of river water, the performing of birds and noises created by other family pets. Prehistoric music, more commonly referred to as ancient music, is the name given to all music produced by preliterate civilizations, beginning somewhere in very late geological history.
